OpenAI wants to help you budget
OpenAI acquired Hiro, a small AI personal finance company, signaling that financial planning is coming to ChatGPT in some form. The details are sparse — we don't know the price, the team size, or what exactly gets integrated — but the intent is clear enough. ChatGPT is moving beyond answering tax questions and summarizing spending trends into something closer to actual financial advice.
It makes sense as a product expansion. People already ask ChatGPT about their budgets, retirement accounts, and loan payoff strategies. The difference now is OpenAI wants to own the tooling that turns those questions into actionable plans, probably with direct data connections to bank accounts, investment platforms, and credit card feeds. Hiro had been building exactly that kind of infrastructure.
The risk is also obvious. Financial planning requires trust, regulatory compliance, and accuracy that most LLMs still struggle with. One hallucinated interest rate or misunderstood tax rule could cost someone real money. OpenAI has been careful to frame its models as assistants, not authorities, but once you start ingesting bank data and recommending asset allocations, that line gets blurry fast.

Microsoft's version would target enterprise customers with "better security controls," which presumably means scoped permissions, audit logs, and admin-level kill switches. The goal is to let Copilot do the same kinds of tasks — filling out forms, navigating internal tools, chaining workflows across apps — without the chaos of an unmanaged agent running loose.
This is the pattern now: open source ships something wild, everyone freaks out about the security implications, and a big company repackages it with guardrails and a price tag. It works because enterprises actually want the capability, they just can't tolerate the risk. Microsoft gets to sell "AI that does your job" without the liability of handing out root access to an LLM.
The real question is whether those security controls actually hold. OpenClaw's risks aren't just about credentials leaking or agents going rogue — they're about intent.
